CATM Talk - Stupid Stories from old CATM folks

I have a few...
A 5 year cop every year would always ask the line instructors how to do the sight corrections on both the BUIS and the M68.
EVERY YEAR same guy
We call him Forrest Forrest Gump.

M9 cop shooter would decock after every shot instead of at the end of the string.
When I saw this I asked him what was wrong. He said the pistol was doing it all by itself. I dont want to say we made fun of him, No we made A LOT of fun about it. I was watching him the whole time.

Also there is only so many times you can tell an M9 shooter do not put your thumb behind the upper slide when firing. After the second time I told one of the line instructors to get the first aid kit. Wouldn't you know it.... that hurts

There are some perks though. M9 shooter had hot brass go down HER blouse and proceeded to pull blouse, t-shirt and bra off to get the hot brass out. I will give her kudos before she did the removal she gently placed the loaded M9 on the ground in front of her. Thank you CATM instructor.

Until history repeats itself that is. Until a bunch of people get killed, a general writes a letter about the sorry state of AF proficiency at arms, and CATM is made into its own career field again.

CATM Talk - New Rifle AFQC Student feedback?

Binczak wrote on 05/04/12 at 06:38:45:

One thing I'm very curious about s to the attention it receives, is how much impact student feedback has.
When it comes down to it, I think student feedback matters when it reflects on the instructors themselves. If an instructor looks like crap, or has a bad attitude, or maybe if something seems unsafe, these are valid concerns from the shooter.
But as far as their input on the course itself, should that really get much creedence?
I just hope we're not listening to a once-a-year shooter say the course is great, or the course is crap, over instructors that say the same.
I know an aircraft mechanic isn't going to care what I have to say about the best way to refill the anti-gravity reservoir. And we should be careful about what we care about as far as what a shooter thinks is the best way to train them on how to shoot

Sorry, but this post makes me kinda nervous.

Concerning student feedback, you are correct in that depending on their background, their feedback may not mean much. I think often when we design student critiques, we ask the wrong questions. I based ours off the course objectives to minimize receiving comments that don't really matter. For example:

"Do you feel confident in your ability to clear, reload, apply immediate action"...etc. "We" as the SMEs determine what they need to know and whether they can perform operations
I see this fight come up not just every ORI, but every ORE as well. Usually the answer comes down to your NCOIC's backbone, and your SF CC's attitude/backbone as well.
I've actually had WEET inspectors tell one NCOIC that he was going to open the containers with or without CATM there, and that he had the same authority as the Wing CC, etc. My NCOIC at the time very diplomatically, but very definitively, offered physical violence as a counter argument. We won.
As for fighting the fight on paper, you just have to find someone that doesn't wipe their ass with our regs, which can be unfortunately quite difficult.

CATM Talk - WTF are these instructors teaching?!?!

jmiller753 wrote on 02/26/12 at 16:45:58:

1. The .22 Rim Fire Adapter. I bet half of theses rookies don’t even know what the heck that is. It was by far the most dangerous and unwanted thing ever introduced in the US Military. It saved nothing, it provided nothing, it made people hate teaching shooting. It was the child of the Tactical Air Command. You see their command manager got the Air Force to swallow this pill and at the same time convert all their ranges to 25 meter..... It took several years and finally someone listened and told the AF to put that junk away. But a lot of money was spent on that junk and instructors are still feeling the pain of having 25 meter ranges today. I have always believed that if you want security you have to pay.... And that means real estate. Shooting Real Ammo + Real Distances = Real Results.

2. Converting the AFSC to fall within the Security Police Career field. Small Arms Instructors are not SP. SP are not Small Arms Instructors. For years the SP Career Field was jealous of us because we could control who, what, when and how many came to the range. SAC regs stated that if less than a certain percentage showed up for class we could reschedule the class because it was not a proper use of the range. And we did and they didn’t like it. So Finally MAC, and Kirtland, and other commands like TAC sold us out. There were certain personnel also whose names I won’t mention......

Wok together.. You got no choice. And tear um up on the semi-annual weapons inspections. Document everything and then go to the IG when they retalliate.

You don't know it, but I am hugging you through the internet.
