Being an ORF from '03, I'm not really up on current regs, uh, er, AFI's

, however the basic safety rules of running a range haven't changed I'm sure.
First though, do you have a baffled range? If so, there is NO fireing forward of the firering line, at all ever. You really need an open bay type range and have a coach moving with the shooter. An impact range would be best, though they are far and few between.
As I recall, there was a note in the regs about firing only one weapon type at a time. So you'll need to break up the stages. You can't have rifle being fired at the same time you're shooting shotgun or pistol. I know, it takes a lot of the fun out of it.
Now, one work around we'd discovered when I was in the COANG, was that we'd go to our local bombing range, and working with the range maintainers, we'd set up a wide open impact range. We still ran a coach with each shooter and we kept everyone on line, but it did allow us to run multi-gun exercises to transition between rifle and pistol. Great training for cops who carry both.
If you are working with a baffled range, I've run multiple targets at different ranges within the same lane before, though to do this you have to have one shooter per 2 lanes and it helps to have the shooter move laterally to keep their shots square to the back stop. You can also run one shooter at a time with multiple targets at different ranges spread laterally down the range.
Review your range's design, BOI's, and check in with Base Safety. If you want to make use of gray area's in the regs, make sure you have the buy in of your commander and base safety. CYA Bro.
